Esoteric Kabbalah is a branch of Jewish mysticism which emerged in various periods in Jewish historical. It is closely related to mysticism that was earlier in its development and reflects the intellectual and cultural environment that was prevalent at the time. It was commonly practiced and well-known. But, due to the fear of misuse and exploitation by the Jewish religions, it was kept secret.
In the Middle Ages, the practice of the Kabbalah had a wide scholarly acceptance. It was a popular subject among scholars. Rishonim were Jewish Sages as well as Kabbalistic scholars with a deep involvement in Kabbalah study. These scholars included Nahmanides, Bahya ben Asher and Rabbieinu Behaye.
